Choosing a bedside table when space is tight
In a narrow bedroom, a few centimetres change how a drawer opens or how you reach a switch. Measure the available space before choosing an open piece, a drawer or a shelf.

Write down three measurements
Measure from the actual bed edge to the nearest obstacle. Note the clear depth, including the skirting board, and the mattress height with the bed made. Keep the three figures together when comparing retailers.
Make room for your routine
Place your usual bedtime book, phone and glass on a sheet of paper. Mark the lamp diameter too. If they overlap, try a wall light or a two-level bedside table before increasing the tabletop size.
Check the opening space
Use a box to simulate an open drawer. Let the bedspread fall as usual and open the wardrobe. If they clash, an open shelf may be easier to use, even when a drawer unit fits on the plan.
